Leftovers
During the course of researching Hodkinsons, a lot of information was found and photographs taken which were not used for the main part of the website. These 'leftovers' - which might be of some interest to some people - are now being put on this page. As with the family trees, this is work which is in perpetual progress.
Ashton-under-Lyne
Junction Mills chimney, Ashton-under-Lyne.

The chimney can be see on the map as two concentric circles below the main mill buildings as indicated by the red circle. (Photographs: SH April, 2013.)

Stamford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne

The postcard belonged to John William Hodkinson and depicts Stamford Street in the early years of the 20th century. On the left are two women who appear to be looking at the people who are across the road who are looking at the photographer who is taking a photograph of all of them! The colour image (below) of the same part of the street was taken over a hundred years later.
To match the two photographs, the railings on the left are useful as a guide. The red oval on the postcard is around the name of the bank – Union Bank – and the same position of the long-gone bank name is indicated on the colour photograph. (Photograph: GH Sept 2017.)
St Peter's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne

At least one member of the Hodkinson family was baptised here. The photograph of the church was taken in 2017 and the image of the 'Welcome' sign is from four years earlier. (Photographs: SH and GH)

The consecration date is easy to miss when walking around the outside of the church, more so since nearly two hundred years of weathering has worn away some of the lettering. The wording reads ' Consecration December 12th 1824'. (Photographs: GH Sep, 2017)
Stalybridge
St Paul's Church, Stalybridge

These photographs were taken in April 2013 by Samuel Hodkinson.
St Paul’s is the church where John William Hodkinson was married and where his first son, George Albert Hodkinson, was baptised. The photograph showing the stone wall was taken from the church grounds and is looking down St Paul’s Street, where the Hodkinsons lived.
Stockport

Adswood Lane West, Stockport

The first photograph, taken in 1973 is looking west along Adswood Lane West. On the left is a corner shop (with a yellow door) at the junction of Warren Street and Adswood Lane West; it was a shop often frequented by the Hodkinsons when they lived on Adswood Lane West. The site of the corner shop is in the second photograph taken in 2011. (Photographs: SH.)
Adswood Inn, Adswood Lane West, Stockport - a closed pub

The two views of Adswood Inn are from October, 2011 and September, 2017. The pub was more or less opposite to where the Hodkinsons used to live. (Photographs: SH and GH.)
Ardern Field Street, Stockport
Ardern Field Street is very much a ‘lost street’. Much of its route remains, but apart from that it is no longer a named street and most of its buildings have been demolished.
During the last years of the reign of Victoria, the Hodkinsons lived on Ardern Field Street, Stockport. For a while, they lived next door to the Kenyon family with the two families linked by the second marriage of Sarah Ellen Hodkinson to George Albert Kenyon, following the death of her first husband, James Hodkinson.

This map is from 1907. The house numbers are marked as indicated and other buildings were industrial premises.

These are two views of Ardern Field Street looking west from Hindley Street towards Higher Hillgate; the first was taken in 2013 (photographer: SH) and the second in 2017 (photographer: GH). No building remains on the left of the photographs. On the right, houses from 59 to 45 stood where the modern office building stands. Further along, Victorian industrial buildings still exist with some hideous alterations. The large office block obstructs the route of the street and occupies the land where houses 19 down to 7 once stood. On the other side of the office block, nothing remains of Ardern Field Street. Nice to see cobbles making a comeback!

These are three views of Ardern Field Street looking towards Hindley Street; the first was taken in 2013 (photographer: SH) and the last two in 2017 (photographer: GH). They give a better view of the surviving Victorian buildings.

Who lived where? Census returns give details of inhabitants on the street and the in-between years can sometimes be filled with information taken from Trade Directories, extracts from three of which are here. In order, they are from 1902, 1907 and 1910. The Hodkinson/Kenyon family can be seen in the 1902 and 1907 lists.
The Hollywood, Bloom Street, Stockport - a closed pub

This photograph of The Hollywood public house on Bloom Street, Stockport was taken in April 2013. A Hodkinson ancestor lived briefly on the same street. Did he ever frequent this particular hostelry? (Photograph: SH.)
Sivori's, 12 Castle Street, Edgeley, Stockport

Remarkably, Sivori’s is still in business after opening in 1947, two years after the end of the Second World War. In the early to late 1960s some members of the Hodkinson family used to have a meal here on Saturdays after watching the matinees at The Plaza cinema. One of these Hodkinsons made a return visit in 2017, over 50 years since he last sat inside.
Some of the history of the cafe can be seen in photographs displayed on the walls inside.
